Muffin, Canine Co-Therapist

psychologist willow grove, pa

Muffin is a rescued Maltese mix who, like many people who come to therapy, had a rough beginning. She was found roaming the streets of the city, abandoned, with matted fur caked with hundreds of fleas, and starving. Her skin was covered with open wounds from chewing the flea bites all over her body. She spent two weeks in the animal hospital to heal her skin and other wounds and nurture her back to health. The vets found she has a loud heart murmur. When she was healthy enough, she was placed in a foster home in which she was reportedly constantly found running free again in the city, twice nearly being hit by a car. She had another failed foster home placement after that, then a successful one in which she was loved and cared for until she was adopted. Finally, I found her picture and story online and my home is now her forever home. She was very insecure and clingy at first and she is still a "Mama's girl," but she is a sweet, cuddly gem who easily learned to be a therapy dog, which fits her loving, calm nature. She knows what it's like to feel hurt/pain and to be abandoned. Despite this, she offers my clients comfort, if they are open to it. She has found her purpose: using her experiences with pain to heal others as a Canine Co-Therapist.

As a Canine Co-therapist, Muffin:

Greets each family and client in the waiting room
Escorts clients into the office
Offers to cuddle with clients to comfort them when upset
Helps people who fear dogs feel safe around her
Helps child clients feel comfortable entering the therapy room
Helps build rapport and safety for all clients
Models balancing caring for others and taking care of oneself
Helps create a safe environment for opening up painful wounds
Gives children someone with whom to practice social skills
Models recovery from harsh circumstances
Allows children to play out their issues with her
Gives hope to foster and adopted children
Brings joy and warmth into the therapy room
Transitions each client and family out of their session

You are most welcome to come and meet Muffin and allow her, along with Teresa, to help you heal.
